HOW WE GOT TO THE HUMANITARIAN SPACE

We arrived at the fourth and last day of the Buenaventura Expedition, nostalgically we were saying goodbye to the port. The day started very early in Puente Nayero, better known as Barrio La Playita and the first Humanitarian Space in Buenaventura more than 5 years ago.
We are welcomed by Yasmani Grueso, a social leader and manager of the area, a friend of the plastic artist José Luis Garcerá who we met at Julieta Restaurant. Garcera is known in the port for his social commitment through art, since through his work he exposes his feeling towards the human and natural environment of the Pacific.

His graphic art ‘graffiti’ at the Bahía Cruz Pier

Yasmani welcomes us happily and hopeful to make visible an area that for years has been consumed by violence and poverty; while she contextualizes the situation in San Francisco street, she introduces us to Don Hilario Reina, artisanal fisherman, leader and friend.

His long working hours, big or small fishes, pirates and your fellow travelers on the high seas can be your friends or foes at sea. I recommend PERSONAJES PACÍFICO HILARIO REINA so that you understand the life of the sea. Can’t miss it!

OUR HOSTS

Listening to Yasmani Grueso, social leader of  CONPAZ made our skin crawl, every story she told us about the famous Pique houses in Buenaventura transported us to a horror movie. We understood the struggle of these people and the tranquility of being the first humanitarian zone in the port for more than 5 years.

On January 29, when we entered the world of Humanitarian Space we were received by the military and a large white billboard displayed “Humanitarian Zone. Exclusive living spaces for the civilian population ”. We were in a small glass bubble where in theory, violence could not enter.

There we carried our backpack and admired  Orlando Castillo´s fight. William Mena, Yasmani Grueso, Hilario Reina among many others joined that battle against violence that past April 13 of 2014. A Palm Sunday, where in the middle of a mass, they had the support of the Interclesiastical Commission for Justice and Peace and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, who in September of that same year, after visiting Puente Nayero, issued the resolution that made it a territory of peace for more than 300 families that inhabit Calle San Francisco.

Yasmani Grueso and Hilario Reina, social leaders of Puente Nayero

It is admirable that many social and cultural leaders continue their fight believing in a dignified life and respect for human rights despite the harassment and death threats against them.

The morning passed and we finished the interview with Don Hilario, who did not miss the opportunity to invite us to a delicious Colombian coffee (tinto ) at his house and showed us his artisanal fishing equipment. Main reason why we visit Calle San Francisco in Barrio La Playita. .

His cement and tile house where we enjoy the company of his colleagues, friends and family. They treated us very kindly. What a good coffee!

Guillermo Caicedo better known as ‘Chamero’ organizing the fishing equipment

That day was revolutionary, those who spoke with us did not miss the opportunity to denounce existing problems in their communities, they made specific requests for disclosure such as the need for a subsidy for artisanal fishermen, the absence of aqueduct, electricity, internet, pollution by the lack of a responsible garbage collection system, among others, they also spoke of extreme poverty, forced displacement and violence in nearby sectors. They all emphasized to us that development plans are just “political promises”.

Our set in Barrio La Playita

It is evident that the community feels the abandonment of the state at different levels, so our visit for Yasmani and Hilario was another opportunity to spread information. Although the people have sought to be self-sufficient through initiatives such as garbage recycling, they need a solution. NATIONAL GOVERNMENT, LISTEN TO THE SOCIAL LEADERS OF THE HUMANITARIAN SPACE OF BUENAVENTURA.

From our APPELLATION OF ORIGIN: COLOMBIAN PACIFIC project, we know the importance of showing processes and joining the struggle for life, for human rights, regardless of race, social and civil status. As a respect for the other and for a dignified life we support #LasVidasNegrasImportan #MITU #LaMingaIndigena, at the end, WE ARE ALL ONE.

    On San Francisco street

Our stay in Puente Nayero was ending, at 11 in the morning, we said goodbye to Yasmani and Hilario, our dear hosts. We arrived at the hotel and picked up our bags, amid the news of the collapse of the road, the famous coronavirus and with the unexpected call from our transporter that would pick us up in Buenaventura.

In a moment we began to solve and we managed to leave at 3 in the afternoon for Cali. My wonderful team on the road recorded nature and ate some snacks (mecato in spanish). Some of us managed to rest and others to shoot.
