GENARO TORRES: The Legacy of the Great Marimbero is a documentary that invites you to discover the master’s legacy, which lies hidden by the influences of modernity that is lived in Guapi, Cauca. In 9 minutes, the viewer will know a little about the simple life of the teacher, his love for music, for life, and his interest in sharing what his ancestors left him as a legacy. Genaro, brother of the renowned ‘Gualajo’, is the last of the Torres who recognizes tuning by ear, the construction of marimba de chonta and is committed both to transmit what his elders left him and to protecting the musical tradition of the Pacific.

TOPICS IT ADDRESSES

Music, Traditional, Marimba, Anecdotes, Legends.

MAIN PUBLIC

Mostly Men between 45 and 60 years old with an interest in culture, traditions, auteur cinema, and less traditional documentaries. He has affinities with humanistic careers and seeks sensations and experiences rather than academic knowledge in the documentaries he consumes.

MOTIVATION OF THE SHORT FILM DIRECTOR

We came to Genaro because he was one of the most transcendental and close representatives of Pacific music that he rejected, more exactly one of the last ear tuners of the chonta marimba, also because I was already a follower of his since he was the protagonist of one of those legendary Yurupary documentaries, a series that I had the fortune to see on the air and that marked me at the time. From the first trip to Guapi, I felt a very strong connection with this valuable human being. I have sought with the camera to visualize his silence, his intimacy, the most comfortable, in a wild environment for us but manageable for a person like him, that simplicity, that relationship with nature, is what the film tries to convey, seeking the truth in each simple moment, evoking the daily life that happens in all the distant Colombian places.

STATEMENT OF THE PRODUCTION COMPANY REGARDING THE SHORT FILM

We feel great satisfaction touring the Pacific and capturing the legacy of master Genaro Torres. This was the first audiovisual product that came to mind when we visited Guapi, Cauca for the first time more than 6 years ago, we felt it important to make the work of the Torres brothers visible.

This short film not only brings us back to the place of our first contact with the territories, but it’s also the culmination of a first goal. The expedition focused this time on him (Genaro) promoting his love for preserving the traditions around the «chonta marimba».

In the Pacific, traditional music is completely integrated into the lives of its inhabitants, which gives more importance to projects like ours that seek to record and spread these traditions and give a face to their main exponents.

WHERE DID THE GUAPI EXPEDITION COME FROM?

Expeditions is the section that we created around the investigation of the Documentary in development APPELLATION OF ORIGIN: WONDERS OF THE PACIFIC, this second Expedition revolves around our visit to the territory to shoot the documentary Genaro Torres directed by Gustavo Angarita. In 4 days of research and filming, memorable moments were captured from that return after the pandemic that surprised us just at the end of the Buenaventura Expedition.

Traveling to Guapi was definitely going back to the roots, it was the territory with which this passion and love for the Pacific began and the reunion with its streets and its people is reflected in the blogs, in the special chapter of the podcast La Mochila Desgualanga’, the interactive map and photographs.

Enjoy this new expedition in Guapi, Cauca!
